Genital warts are caused by some type of human papilloma virus, commonly known as HPV. HPV is a contagious sexually transmitted disease and has many subtypes or strains and some of them give rise to genital warts. 90% of all warts are caused by strains known as 6 and 11. After being infected, the warts take 30 to 90 days to develop and be noticeable.
