Fruit Salad Making Tips
One of the most delicious desserts is actually the fruit bowl or the so called fruit salad. It is very much similar to the fruit platter, except for the fact that the fruit salad has a dressing, while a platter of fruits are just an assortment of cut fruits arranged on a plate. All over the world, the fruit salad can be considered as a favorite dessert, not only because of the sweet taste it provides, but also because of the many health benefits one gets from eating it.
The fruit bowl is not merely a dessert, but may also be eaten as an appetizer. The fruits may either be covered in a sweet syrup or may be lathered with the own juices of the fruits. Not all restaurants have a fruit salad, fruit platter, etc. as desserts, so if you are craving for fruits, the best way is t learn how to make a fruit salad yourself. The secret to making a successful salad is to have good texture. To ensure that the texture of your salad is maintained, with all ingredients clean and dry – you need a Salad Spinner. Using a OXO Salad Spinner is easy.
Simply place your salad vegetables into the colander of your Salad Spinner and rinse thoroughly, and then replace the colander into the Salad Spinner bowl and spin. Even the most delicate leaf, sprout or herb is guaranteed to come out looking firm and fresh – and absolutely clean. The texture of some fragile salad vegetables can be damaged by rough shaking or rolling in kitchen towels etc to remove excessive moisture spoiling an otherwise perfect garden salad. Too much moisture in your salad base can spoil the effect of added croutons, and particularly oil-based dressings. Continue reading ‘OXO Salad spinners’ »

Remember all the good salads at the family dinners at grandma’s house? I lived next door to my grandmother and I can remember helping the aunts carry in their salads and casseroles for large family dinners. Some of these salads may remind you of those days in your life. Choose from Cornbread Tomato Salad, a Creamy Rice Molded Salad or the Stuffed Pear Salad and go back in time.
CORNBREAD TOMATO SALAD
This recipe is from an old yellowed newspaper clipping.
1 pkg (6-oz) cornbread mix
4 medium tomatoes, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 yellow onion, chopped
1/2 cup sweet pickles, chopped
9 slices bacon, cooked crisp and crumbled
1 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sweet pickle juice
Bake cornbread according to the package instructions. Cool, crumble, and set cornbread aside. Continue reading ‘Vintage Salad Recipes: Cornbread Tomato, Creamy Rice Molded Salad, and Stuffed Pear Salad’ »

When it comes to summer picnics, two of the classic foods that come to mind to me are great tasting macaroni and potato salads. I don’t think any summer picnic would be complete without them.
If you are cooking for a large group, both of these recipes can be easily doubled. I recommend refrigerating them for at least 6 hours before serving them. Continue reading ‘Summer Picnics – Classic Macaroni and Potato Salad Recipes’ »
